I don't know if this would qualify as THE GREAT invention, but for me the mobile phone comes pretty high up the list. Having lived through the late '60s and the '70s with all kinds of science fiction series portraying a mobile communications solution, I think it's pretty cool that most of us now carry something like this in our pockets every day. Although it's sometimes a pain to be so accessible, I also think it's really neat that I can contact any phone user in the world from my mobile, and they can contact me, wherever I am.

I will add the calendar.

Probably invented before writing, mapping the moons cycles, knowing the shortest days and longest days helped man find a rhythm in life and the concept of time.
Many based religious rites, tribes agreed to meet, things like that allowed man to further impose his will upon the world and help make sense of the larger universe around us.
Trying to understand the calendar forced man to use greater numbers and so began to conquer math -- then being used for greater feats like building a pyramid -- which appears to be a calendar of sorts, on a specific day the sunlight will shine all the way into a chamber.
Stonehenge and the Mayan Calendar noted the passing of time.

Today we are so obsessed with the concept of calendar, we have cellphones that get the most accurate time from a satellite.

Language.

It allows us to pass our discoveries and inventions on to other people and to future generations. Without it, every person would have to start all over again.

A close second would be written language. We are still learning from the writings of long gone civilizations from the written records.

Penicillin - actually that was a discovery, rather than an invention.

Greatest invention....... television. You can sedate and control an entire nation without blood being spilled. Very humane.
