I want an entry lock that allows you to lock the door before leaving, and it stays locked after you reenter with the key. In other words, it stays locked at all times until you turn the dial on the inside.

Similar to what they have in hotels - easy to lock yourself out - but idiot proof in terms of making sure you always lock the door.

I have one that is made by Schlage, but according to the people at Loews, this type is no longer produced (too many complaints form people locking themselves out evidently) I assume there is one on ebay or somewhere out there, but I don't even know what it's called.

Dave the Key Man here, Professional Locksmith since 1981. I don't sell lawnmowers, and home improvement stores should not sell locks. Even more important, they should not tell lies. Schlage's heavy duty residential/light duty commercial lock, the "A" series offers exactly the model you're describing. The A53 does what you want. It is a Grade 1 lockset and should last more than 20 years with little or no maintenance. The lock you can purchase from home improvement guys will give you about five years and is less secure. The A series costs more, but it is definately worth the price difference. I'm also happy to help you find a locksmith in your area to purchase this lock. Retail is $151 in the bright brass lifetime finish. www.DavetheKeyMan.com

Why don't you try a keyless door lock. There was something like this on the Discovery Channel where the family was always leaving the front door unlocked. This way all you have to remember is the code. They also have some that come with a key override just in case you do. Here are a few links but you can do price comparisons online

right here's some recommendations get rid of the lock, both the locks, or inspite of. placed your own lock in and do not supply a key to the owner, duct tape the former lock so it would not by danger lock itself. you recognize you're not to any extent further required to grant all and multiple a key on your position of abode perfect? no longer even a landlord has a perfect to be on your position once you're not to any extent further round, so why would he want a key first of all? if he needs to make certain your no longer tearing up the position then time table a time for him to go back through. Edit: the owner has a perfect to ‘life like get entry to’. What ‘life like get entry to’ skill relies upon on why they favor to achieve get entry to. as an celebration, in an emergency, the owner is entitled to instantaneous get entry to to finish paintings, yet she or he does no longer have a perfect to enter without be conscious in the different situations, till a courtroom order has been received. that would not advise that they could have a key for such emergencies, and that i for one (alongside with the county I stay in) trust that it will be unreasonable. Get your info immediately woman earlier you flow thumbs downing human beings abou tthings you're only 50% particular about.

Made by Schlage and sold at Home Depot & Menards. I think they call it a utility/storage room lock. Sold in light and medium duty. May be hard to find on the shelf but I found them!
