Yes, the story of Selkirk really happened and it served as the inspiration for the story of Robinson Crusoe.

If you go to Lower Largo, on the south coast of Fife, Scotland, you can see a statue of Alexander Selkirk in his Robinson Crusoe outfit on the wall of one of the houses. It is up at the level of the first floor! (that's the second floor if you're American)

Yes, Alexander Selkirk was put off the ship he was on. He was marooned of the coast of Chile. Oddly enough the island he was on has been ignored and a near by island is identified as the one he was on. I have no idea why or why he was kicked of the ship in the first place.
