i asked question earlier, my son is set up as a limited user, i have administrator rights, he doesn't and we have tried several internet program such as net nanny and mcaffee parental controls, but when he is on the net he can pull down the internet options from toolbar and change the settings, also when the programs are messed with they completly shut down the internet, my son is 12 and autistic, all we want to do is let him keep playing on the net, without going onto either porn or sites like myspace and piczo i appreciate that i could turn off the pc etc, but it is my sons only interest and am on here for genuine advice, as pc world etc don't know, we have tried putting sites on banned list but it is the fact that he can dissable the parental control software without having administrator rights that we want to stop, thanks

I don't recommend Norton - will slow your PC down and will frustrate anyone - this is more likely to make your son turn it off. You say you have Mcafee; do you have Mcafee Privacy Service? If so, set up an Admin account for you and a 'Child' account for your son. This gives you a bit of content filtering. You can then ban www.piczo.com, www.myspace.com or whatever site you wish by adjusting the settings of what they can/cannot access. Just play around with it.

Also use (from the browser) Tools>Internet Options>Security, click "Restricted Sites", click "Sites" and then add the ones you want your son to be unable to access.

There is also an advanced way to block individual sites. Go to the folder c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc by copying and pasting that line into the address bar of your browser or Windows Explorer. Double click the file called "hosts". The choose "Notepad" from the list that appears. Insert the following lines AFTER the line that says 127.0.0.1 localhost.

127.0.0.1 www.piczo.com
127.0.0.1 www.myspace.com

For any site that you wish to ban, just add a new line with 127.0.0.1 followed by a space followed by the website name (without http://). Be careful not to put anything in front of "127.0.0.1 localhost". If you want to write a comment to remind you what you put a site in there for, put a '#' before the comment.

If you are not very technically-minded in the way of computers, stick to McAfee Privacy Service and the Restricted Sites.

Go to tools, Internet options, content, enable. Once you have enabled it - you can choose what sites he goes on and he can't later it without a password. Do it when he is not around and make sure he doesn't have the password. Also go to control panel - user accounts and give him his own user account - that will also give him his own password and he won't be able to log in as administrator. But put innocent music and pictures in shared folders. Or he won't be able to use them. It takes a while to child proof a computer - it should be easier. The big problem is search engines - he still probably be able to switch off safe search - and get porno stuff. You may have to ban him from using Google and Yahoo.

I highly recommend Norton Internet Security Suite. It gives you control to the user level and allows you to designate child and adult/supervisor accounts with password protection for each level.
