This is one of the main points argued by philosophers, even today. Now you need to keep in mind that what you consider reality is really just an accumulation of what your senses have picked up, for the moment lets ignore your personal opinion. For example take an ice cream cone. You can see the cone with the scoop of ice cream, feel the texture and temperature, taste whatever flavor it is, smell it and hear the cone crunching in your mouth. But the image that you have of an ice cream cone may be a sugar cone with cookies and cream single scoop, while another persons image is waffle cone with chocolate double scoop and sprinkles. You can see, hear, smell, taste, touch in what we call reality. Now take a dream. In a dream you can also touch, smell, taste, hear, see; sometimes in a vividness that appears real. How are you sure that the dream is a dream and reality is reality. The truth is that we basically say what continues is real what doesn't is a dream. So now let's take into account that maybe what you think is past memories are not real, but figments of your imagination. You can only be sure of three things: the first that you exist, because you think; that you exist right at this moment, because the past could be false; and that you are a thinking thing, because theres no way to prove that under the body we see, feel, etc. there exists something real. Basically the only reality is what your senses are telling you, what you percieve through your senses, that is reality.

I will take a stab at explaining this to you. Let me start by saying that this quote can be interpreted in many ways. It depends largely on what you choose to believe the true meaning of "perception" to be. There are a number of differing theories and definitions. "Perception" is a highly debated topic. I will give you this take on it as it seems to differ from what most people have said so far. Perception and perspective are two different things - very different things. It is an important distinction, especially for understanding the aforementioned quote in the way I am about to explain. Perception is what happens when you use your senses - sight, taste, touch, sound, smell. It is (for our purposes here) pure - objective. Perspective is how you interpret the things you perceive. This happens by using your brain. It includes experience and emotion, therefore it is tainted - subjective. "Perception is reality" excludes thoughtful interpretation. It excludes perspective. Once you add perspective, it is no longer "reality." If something is "real" (truly real) then it must be real for everyone. We all start with reality... when we throw our thoughts into the mix... it is no longer real. Because now it is different dependant upon how it is interpreted. And, interpretation is unique to an individual. Again, this is an opinion based on one set of theories. There are so many. Also, this is a very simplistic explanation of something that is really so much more involved. I could throw in several contradiction to nearly everything I have said. But for the sake of sanity (my own), I won’t :) A good idea is to bone up on some philosophy and cognitive psychology, especially regarding “perception.” Then, you can arrive at your own conclusion with a great number of theories at your disposal. :)

I will tell you exactly..It means that we are all GOD because we all create our own realities. Here on earth there is a collective or collaborative perception. On the other side is where we mainly will experience our own personal perception our own personal reality. That is why when we die we will see not only other dead but also other alive..we relive or reevalutate our life in full bloom.. some people who have died and came back said they relived a very important time in their current life. One woman explained how she relived her entire pregnancy and giving birth to her child like it was far more real..she said it was more real than she remembered it. Which means that the people, say her husband and child were there with her in the same way you and I are with people here on earth..there is no difference..her perception on the other side is her reality and even though her husbands physical earthly mind and body was not really there with her. She did perceive it as such and so there you go..it does not matter whether you are here or there..you are basically everywhere at everytime, but only in others perceptions.. your perception is currently stuck in a somewhat lower vibration/physcial form. This will end and you then will be in a non physcial form and your perception will be whatever you lived and whatever you believe in. So be careful what you believe in because that will be your perception when you cross over.

That's a statement,,not a proven FACT,,,nor may it ever be.
We perceive, as a USUAL, natural use of senses, and usually BELIEVE what we SEE.
IT is our reality, to have the "perception" that injuries HURT, that the sky is BLUE,,,,,etc. etc. etc.
Does that make it all FACT? DOES it even matter? It's our fact, our truth, our learned and experienced belief.
Assume for a moment that you are mentally challenged, to the point that you weren't able to ascimilate what OTHERS were trying to TEACH, or impress on you. Might that mean that in YOUR perception, the concept of BLUE, as it relates to the color of the sky, has no real concrete context? AND if you Perceive what is,,, FOR YOU,,, doesn't that make it your REALITY?

The following poem should mostly answer your question :
However keep in mind that this world whether dream or not has a purpose for all of us to live in and do our duty nicely, okay ?
Dream
Dedicated To the dream world
Baby's world, Home
Not so attractive
Parents unraveled beauties
slowly child dreamt
Teachers played roles
molded, instilled ambitions
Strange unknown unpredictable
world, Bizarre dreams
Maturity with gray hairs
Same obscurity, ignorance
When I ponder
I perceive world as Dream

It means that your worldview (your reality) is based on what you see (your perception). This is through things like experiences, your upbringing, and other factors. There is no true reality, it's simply what you think the world is. For example, you can think that the world is filled with a bunch of idiots or you can think that the world is filled with great, budding minds. Either way, that's a reality unique to you.

its a very true statement. everything that we experience is not reality in itself. it is our perception. we think that there is a reality behind that perception, but we could never be certain. reality cannot be perceived itself, it is always mediated by our perceptions.
