Or do you think that this could be eliminated one day?

I believe there will always be a class of people who are poor and destitute because you will never have all people making the same amount of income. Because the needs of the geography come first, and the people in the area are forced to meet those needs as opposed to what they need in order to survive. So some have to make more and some have to make less. The other factor in this equation is education.

Plus, some unfortunately may choose to live like this because they have already decided that is how they wish to live -- feeding off of others.

The only way create a world without the poor and destitute is to remove economics from the picture. As long as their is an economy we will always have the different classes of people with different incomes and people struggling to make ends meet. As it stands right now, in order for the US not to be struggling in our present conditions our economy needs to become more balanced so that most of the people are falling in the middle class. The more the middle class is sucked out of our society the more people will struggle to make ends meet.

The only way it could be eliminated would for the rich give a hand to the poor, so that their living conditions improve, but this isn't likely to happen., because the rich are greedy, and want to get richer, and you don't get richer by giving away money.

there have always been poor and destitute people and there always will be. the reason for that is the unwillingness of some to do anything to better themselves. they wait for a handout and they get it. where's the motivation to improve their state in life if things are handed to them, no effort required?
