The sound card is an expansion card that plugs into your pci slot in your motherboard, and it's purpose is to add processing power for sounds. Depending on the card it may have high quality d/a converter to increase the sound fidelity. The sound card has a processor chip and memory. The multimedia driver on your computer interracts with the sound card to dedicate sound processing to the card, and take the work away from the system processor. So, with a system processor, a video card, and a sound card, it's like having 3 processors working at the same time, and your computer is much faster, and there is extra RAM memory available. The sound card may also enable you to plug into your home theater system, or surround sound with up to 8 speakers.

You're computer has the ability to play sounds for you, as long as there is a built-in sound card or pci sound card installed into one of the pci slots of the computer. The card transfers the audio to your speaker system whether it's built into the computer or external like the one I use. I bought a great 5.1 digital surround sound system and have it all hooked up to the sound card which I installed into a pci slot inside the computer. Hope this helps. Larry.
