That depends on what type of browser you are using. Windows Internet go to "TOOLS" and Select "Options" under the tab "General" at the bottom you will find your settings for History. You can select History or set the settings to how ever long you want.
You can also click on the clock on your tool bar and delete what you want from that pull down screen.
If you are using Mozilla Firefox your history is under "Go" or select Control H. You can delete the days and items that you want, it is not nearly as simple as Windows but you can do it.

If you are using Internet Explorer do not just click on history and delete, yes you are deleting it but there are still traces of everything you have viewed on your computer. If you want to completely delete everything then click on tools ->internet options -> delete files (this will take a minute or two) -> then click on settings next to delete files -> then click on view files -> and there is everything you have ever visited on the internet. It will take a while to delete everything from there.

Well aside from using tools menu on your browser (Tools-Internet Options-Clear History) You could get a file shredding utility such as StompSoft's Digital File Shredder Pro, which will allow you to permanently delete your internet history, cookies, temp files, cache and much more.
