They are historically, politically and culturally different.
They are not in the same generation or even the same world.
Castro is no threat and hasn't been one since the Soviets left.
On the contrary, we're the ones with a botched mini-invasion and a couple bungled assassination attempts against him.
It's a bogus comparison and people making the claim are just trying to stir up emotions.
Anyway, the day after Castro dies we will down there building hotels and casinos in Havana faster than you can imagine.

Chavez is more like the new Stalin.
In Venezuela there are two classes, the super rich and the super poor. The middle calss is slowly fading away. Stalin used Siberian death camps, Chavez has just choked off the countries money. He may not send 36,000,000 people to die, but the results will be abject poverty to achieve his socialist utopia. By keeping his people dependant on the government for basic needs he is galvanizing his position for a long time.
But the one thing Chavez has that Castro didn't is a personality. Chavez is able to convince other world leaders that he is not a nutjob who is willing to maintain power by driving his people into poverty.

No. He's not half the man Castro is. He is simply building up an alliance that will ensure plenty of media coverage that will give him a political boost at home and distract the population from immediate domestic problems.
Political aggression is a popular weapon in the armouries of shaky governments.

he is obviously filling some purpose since he is not being bumped off.
just wait until starts up with the Jews and then he'll be gone. he has been trying for some time to establish a relationship with Israel whom in his belief run the 'new world order' (he's big into conspiracy theories) without much success.
So at the moment he's trying to establish relations with Islamic countries to swade Jewish interests. But its all in his mind.
I think it is importent to acknowledge that he has improved the lot of the poorer people of his country. There def was a very wide margin in between the wealthy and poor.

Chavez is the early signal for a total disaster for the US. A great proof that decades of wrongdoings in the field of foreign policy does not lead to anything but disgrace. Ask neocons how it feels to be flashed down toilets of the history.

In the way that he tries to free his country from US domination, he certainly is.
He is democratically elected, and he has to look for support where he finds it, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" would spring to mind.
I like him because he has the guts to tell things as they are, even if that makes him very unpopular with a powerful neighbour.
