I love finding out obscure information about the people and places we learned about in school. Did you know that pasta was really invented by the Chinese? Or that the "uncivilized" Mayans had a more accurate calendar than the Spaniards who conquered them? Or that when Richard the Lion-Hearted became ill on the Crusades, his Muslim counterpart, Sulian the Great, sent fruit and other assistance to help cure him? When you get to know the little details, sometimes that "dry" history isn't so dry anymore.

Histroy tells us who we are, where we came from. It defines us as a species, it allows us to see the follie and wisdom that has both limited us and allowed us to grow and expand as a species. I also find it fascinating because history gives us a connection to the past in regards to faimly origins. I have recently found out that my family can trace its roots back to the time of William the Conqueror and some of the blood lines go back even further. It makes me wonder about how people lived back then, how they really perceived their place in the world and if the world would really be different if certain events did not take place when they did.

That it shows us how our cultures, lifestyles and technologies came to be, which might give us a clue as to where we are headed as a species. And that it shows us mistakes made in the past so that we may learn from and not repeat them.

But it's also good that historians continue to unearth new evidence that challenge conventionally held beliefs and that also revise and improve our understanding of historical events. History is not some dessicated, boring subject. It's a living record of the human race.

The learning about how people lived back then compared to the way we live now. The hardships they had to face and how they over came them. We are just too soft today. The what ifs are fun too. What if such and such had happened instead of what really happen and how would that have had an effect on how society is or could have been today.

What I love the most about world history is that everything centers around the birth of Jesus Christ.

The more we learn about history the more we should learn about ourselves.
Unfortunately, some of those lessons haven't been learnt and we still make the same mistakes.
