Recent studies have shown that people who are sleep deprived behave as if they are drunk. Their brain waves show the same thing.
Prolonged sleep deprivation causes hallucinations, disorientation, confusion and clumsiness. Obviously, people who are forced to stay awake for several shifts in a row (like interns and nurses) cannot function properly. They make errors, some of them serious.
They drive off the road when they're going home, or drive into oncoming traffic. NOT GOOD.

I know from experience that sleep deprivation can make driving dangerous even if one gets into the habit of using some type of uppers. (dangerous habit, it is!)

I suffered from insomnia at one stressful time, and there were days when I had to rest almost all day to recover from the cumulative effects of sleep deprivation.
