The highest rank an educated person could become originally was that of "Philosopher." This eventually turned into Doctor of Philosophy, to distinguish from Doctor of Medicine (which was originally more like a glorified auto (human)mechanics degree). All the other doctorate degrees followed. Isaac Newton's doctorate was in Natural Philosophy. The distinction still holds somewhat today (although barely). Ph.D's are supposed to be contributing to research, whereas MD's, Pharm.D's, Ed.D's DBA's are supposed to be practioners--hence the term "professional" degrees. Psychology screws this up because all their practitioners get Ph.D degrees. Also, Education, Nursing, and more disciplines now offer Ph.D degrees. The idea is to make a similar distinction within the field, but now there is almost no distinction.

I think the difference is lies in experience. I can get a professional degree as a physical Therapist with 1-2 years experience, but a doctoral degree would pretty much require at least 5-10 years working experience, not to mention the work one has to do to get a doctorate. And how much time it can take to achieve it.

A doctorate is the highest degree offered in a field of sudy, be it medicine, law, philosophy, history, or any other academic discipline. The term professional degree is commonly referred to those in medicine, law, engineering, and such discipline, where in fact any degree from master's on up can be considered a professional degree.

No. You guys have it wrong.
He means that a doctorate = Ph.D, DBA, etc. These are all research degrees.
Professional degree = JD, MBA, MD, DVM. These can be doctorates, but they work for practical purposes and not research.
