as i am driving i can switch gears from driving to neutral without putting on the brake first .i can switch gears like that all the time[except for switching to reverse].could it be the transmission,that is what i am guessing.it has done this every since i have had the car.[about 5 years]

It's a 700R4 chevy piece of junk! You don't have anything different than every other chevy built with that mishap of a transmission! Just try and find a good transmission shop that will drill the thing out (they starve for oil) and use the best clutch packs available! Don't use cheap converters either!
PS: DO NOT change gears with that transmission unless you are at a complete stop!!!! Read this again and again until it sinks in real deep!!!!!!! VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!

thats normal for all cars, my envoy does it my firebird does it my moms grand prix does it my dads mustang does it. its a normal opration of the trans.
