The answer may be moot for a while--this holiday season following their initial release, there are only going to be 400,000 PS3's available in the U.S. as opposed to 1 million Wii's. So even if you *wanted* a PS3, it's a good possibility that you may not wind up getting it.
Anyway, the video console wars have been going on since there have been video consoles, and there's been no real way to predict who "wins" each generation--this past generation the PS2 was the recognized winner, with the XBox nonetheless successful, the GameCube holding its own and the Dreamcast's failure causing Sega to exit the console business. Prior to that, Nintendo (N64) and Sony (PS1) were tops with 3DO, Atari Jaguar and Sega Saturn falling by the wayside; before that, it was Sega (Genesis) and Nintendo (SNES) who beat out the TurboGrafx 16 and the Neo Geo.
So one can't really predict with absolute certainty which system will be popular, but what the geek pundits seem to believe is that the PS3 could well be Sony's Waterloo--at $600 for the console, limited quantities, many delays, and on the heels of some bad press for Sony ("rootkits" on Sony CD's rendering some Windows PC's more vulnerable to attacks, the failure of the UMD format and the PSP's lackluster performance, and most recently exploding computer laptop batteries manufactured by Sony for Apple and Dell). Many believe that most gamers will pick up the Wii as a secondary console to either a 360 or a PS3; the problem is that many will probably choose the already-established 360.
The PS3 also carries with it the additional burden of being a primary vehicle for Sony's Blu-Ray high-definition video technology, which is in competition with the HD-DVD format. If the PS3 flops, Blu-Ray may also flop. Meanwhile HD-DVD is already getting the upper hand in the high-definition disc market, with less expensive players and Microsoft's impending release of an external HD-DVD drive for XBox 360's for about $200, making it very tempting for those who already have a 360 and want to get into the high-def video thing. With built-in Blu-Ray technology jacking up the price of the PS3 (as well as contributing to its slowed production), Sony may be making the PS3 *less* appealing to consumers.
So to put it simply, things are not looking good for the PS3, but you never know--they may come up with something new and refreshing that all the gamers will flock to and make the PS3 a surprise success.
Meanwhile, Nintendo's Wii will probably be the hot thing this Christmas--with a larger amount of Wii's hitting the market, many parents will go to stores hunting for PS3's and leaving with Wii's. Nintendo's angle with the Wii and its unusual controller seems to be as "the console for the rest of us"--casual video game players who are "social players," taking on their friends at parties, not overly concerned with uber-detailed graphics or confusing button layouts. As one of those casual players, I know I'm getting one this November.

Sony basically looks to be copying Xbox Live step by step, which could mean a good online service. I'm a little concerned about the Wii's reported use of friend codes, like the DS's online games, but we'll have to see what they finally settle on.
PS3 will certainly be popular. It would have to be popular to sell at that price. Whether the price (not just of the console but of the games, which will be $60+) hurts them in the long run and how much, we'll have to wait and see. Never underestimate the power of fanboyism: Sony has die-hard fans that would pay almost anything for a new console.
PS3 will also have great third party support, like the PSX and the PS2 before it. If the PS3 doesn't sell as well as Sony hopes, I would expect them to lose some of the grip they have on the third party developers.
The Wii is positioned to be a massive success already, but there are so many ways Nintendo could mess this up. This is Nintendo of course, so expect stellar first party games, and the third party support looks good so far, but it remains to be seen if that support will continue. I have a feeling the Wii is going to do quite well in sales, as a secondary console.

Probably neither one will have a good online service, at least compared to the Xbox 360. Both will probably last for 3-5 years, but the Ps3 is $600, while the Wii is only $250. The Ps3 will probably be better than the Wii (not to mention more powerful), but the Wii will be much cheaper. Just because the Wii is cheap, doesn't necessarily mean it's worse.

i think it depends on you. i agree with everyone else about the difficulty of getting a ps3 due to the limited number they're releasing in the U.S. that can be resolved by reserving one either online at sites like amazon.com or a store like gamestop or gamecrazy. it also depends on how much you're willing to spend $600 vs $250. and what kind of games you're going for. but know that with the wii, you'll be able to play games from all the Nintendo systems, including the original. so if you're nostalgic for games like duck hunt, mario bros., etc you can play them on that system. as for online service, i think that there are kinks no matter which system you get because they're both so new. so it really is just your personal preference.
