Rather was forced out after he got caught using forged memos about President Bush. He tried to say he was duped,but, it was obvious that he was either incompetent( which he's not) or he was being dishonest. The NBC guy had announced that he would retire sometime after the 2004 election, so he did. FYI the ABC guy died.

He lost all of his credability by being caught in basically a lie.

More accuratley, he reported a news story that fit his agenda and which later proved to be false. He did this just prior to the elections so it was obvious that he was attempted to sway the votes in Kerrys favor.

Brokaw retired and Peter Jennings passed away from lung cancer.

Dan Rather got caught lying, Tom Brokaw retired like Rather should have years earlier!

Because he lied about Bush. And just kept lying, and lying for months.
He always was a freak, but this lying got too embarrassing for CBS.
Rather caused CBS to be laughed at around the world.
