How can this type of miscommunication be effectively addressed or completely avoided?

I would have to say electronic communication, such as email or text messages. Since we do not get the inflection of people's voices, we cannot tell always if people are angry, joking, sarcastic, etc.

We could avoid this miscommunication by using a phone and calling someone or speaking face-to-face, where we would get body language as well as the voice intonation.

The best one I can think of is the miscommunication between the white house & the people.

My Mother In-law. She doesn't know what she's talking about most of the time. Just avoid her and ignore what she says if you have to endure her company.
