I have a desktop computer at home. I am looking for a very basic notebook that I can take with me to do homework. I don't need anything special at all, I would just basically be using it for homework to transfer onto my desktop at home. I looking for something cheap, but something that will last.
any ideas?

If you are just using this notebook for hw purposes, a Dell or Toshiba would be your best bet. Dell is inexpensive, however it does have some issues with overheating, and sometimes breaking down. Toshiba is also a good laptop, but it can also overheat. Remember, inexpensive laptops are what they are. Inexpensive. You're not going to get much quality from them. I prefer Toshiba over Dell. Their satellite computers are nice.

You can get a basic Toshiba Satellite laptop, or an HP laptop for about $500.

I would recommend you to buy The Averatec 3300 series. (http://www.averatec.com) It's cheap, but really powerful! I've been using it for 2 years. No regrets. Now I have HP Pavilion dv1000. It's a little bit pricy but i love it.
