first of all, if you DO decide to stick with pads, please do *not* use Always. anything plastic rubbing against your skin (esp. THAT skin) all day is simply not good for you. can lead to yeast infections, vaginal infections, itching, and general irritation. this type of thing isn't discussed much in general, but i've heard it from a lot of doctors, and have experienced it firsthand.
i like stayfree pads, b/c the topsheet (the part that touches you) is not made from plastic & are super-comfortable. also very absorbent.
anyway, any of those mainstream pad brands make long ones, with wings, etc. so if you choose not to begin using tampons, you have a lot of options. there are a bunch of good suggestions on this page, including doubling up tampons + pads.
good luck! =)

Try using a product called "Instead." It is sold at CVS and Target. (You can't find it at Krogers or Wal-Mart.) You can wear this twice as long as a tampon. You can also have sex while on your period if you put a new Instead in before having sex. These are incredible. I've used them for about 5 years now and will never use a tampon or pad again!

Okay, then it's time for you to maybe start learning about tampons. These are tube shaped peices of cotton that are inserted into the vagina in order to catch your flow before it exits the body. When inserted correctly you feel absolutely nothing. The best part is you can do any physical activity, including swimming. After so many hours you remove it by gently pulling on the attached string and flush down the toilet. They are very discreet to carry around and so small you can keep one in your jeans pocket.

Try tampons---extra thick, that should do the trick---and change those tampons at least every 3-4 hours.....
Also, go to a doctor. They can take a simple bloodtest to determine if you have some sort of hormone problems because a period just should not be that heavy....

First of all -- wear a tampon (change every 2 hours) with a panty liner when you go out. Then if you want get the Always overnight (thin) pads for sleeping.

I had the same problem until I started wearing tampons. I can't imagine ever going back to pads. If you are young they make slender ones.

Try a new pad. There are several. I had a major issue with this and finally found "Always" with wings, They come in several lengths, are very thin and absorbant. I don't even have troubles while sleeping or exercising.

Try using a tampon along with a pad.
I never could do just pads for the same reason you describe, and too many accidents.
Use a tampon as well.
