Ignore the person, then tell her/him, "I apologize but I have a lot on my mind right now and I need some quiet time so I can think."
When s/he ask what is the problem . . . . . tell the her/him that it is personal and you will work it out but for now you are preoccupied and cannot engage in his/her conversation.
This is a good plan, hope it works out for you!! :-)

Ah! Every company seems to have that person who has to find someone's ear to rape. I hate those kind of people. It might not be so bad if they actually had a point to the stories, but very seldom will you find that.
Tell your coworker that you are going through a series of personal problems at the moment and you really just need some uninterrupted alone time to figure things out, and work is about the only place you can do that because when you are at home someone is always bothering you, calling you on the phone, or sitting on the couch talking your ear off. You simply need quite time to rummage through your thoughts and feelings.
Thank that person for being such a good friend in understanding your dilemma. Make sure you stress you have people at home that will not give you alone time because they are always trying to talk your ear off.
If that person don't get the clue, you may just have to be honest, or You could put cotton in your ears and claim to have a very highly infectious earache and can not hear a word of anything.

Send them an email, or have someone send them an email. The email should say:
"You talk way too much. Yes, that's right you talk to much. Your talking is too frequent. From now on you must talk seldom.
If you persist in talking so much, I will hire a Choir to come and sing You Talk Too Much, and I will have it video taped."
The email may work, but if not, follow through with your threat.

I would just kind of hint...one day when they're going on about something, appear distracted and then say something like, "Sorry if I'm not really listening, I'm really preoccupied today." Hopefully they'll get the idea. Either that, or when they start talking, kind of walk away and make it seem like you have something else to do.

just smile and shake your head in a "no" fashion. when they say "what?", just ask them if they ever get a chance to breathe.
tell them that it seems like they are always "in a great mood"
itll get them thinking because they dont quite get it, and then in conversations to come, when you dont want to hear them talking, you can just say that you are in a bad mood...they will instantly realize that you dont want to associate at the moment because you view them in a good mood and you are in a bad one.
works for me all the time.

You can always throw your desk at him or stuff it in his mouth.
But the easiest way is always to tell 'em nicely that you need some peace and quiet right now.

Trust me, you can tell them and they'll give you a long answer back. it's not worth it. They can't help themselves.
