Federalism is the grouping of seperate regions that have different ethnicity, language, religion, etc. The US is a federation of 50 seperate, self-determining states

federalism is what happens in the US government where all states are represented in the lawgiving bodies, according to their number of citizens.
it also happens in many other modern countries which very often consist of several to lots of ancient countries, kingdoms, or just ethnic groups...
india is a good example, germany, austria... switzerland of course, the oldest federation still alive... and it is planned to happen in iraq where the kurds of northern iraq as well as other smaller ethnic groups demand representation in a newly formed government.
