The 380 SE doesn't have an actual "automatic choke" per-se!
The "e" denotes that it is a fuel injection system instead of a carbureter! Fuel injection uses a "cold start" injector, which is located(usually) at the front portion of the main intake maniflod system. Unfortunately the 380SE isn't in my old chilton book (only goes up to the 350SE). So I can't get real specific! However the cold start injector is supposed to put a shot or "raw" gas directly into the manifold to get the engine started, - after engine is running, it "shuts down",- since the regular fuel injection system is capable of providing the fuel to keep it running,-(if everything works right)! If this valve doesn't work, it will be harder to start- proportionately to the ambient temperature!

Get yourself a Haynes auto repair manual that includes your model Mercedes,- and it will tell you just how to check it, and other asscociated things so that the system can be proven to "do all it can do". It will pay for itself very quickly, and be very useful whenever you have a problem, or want to find anything on the car (including wiring diagrame)!

I worked in a foreign car rapair shop for a number of years, as well as restoring Mercedes for about 10. A properly maintained and adjusted Mercedes is a very good car, - one that isn't is a "shell-out falter", -and will cost you a "bundle". On this matter, your mechanic is the most critical part of having a "good car".
