On most vehicles it's pretty difficult to "check". I would go by the rule of thumb, every 5 years or 100,000kms. (60,000 miles), whichever comes first, as the replacement interval.

depending on the car you have there is an inspection hole to look through,on some models you would have to take off the upper part of the guard cover ,if you were more specific about the year, make and model I could tell you exactly what to do,hope that I was helpful,delmy d

I don't think you can check it, just replace at, or just before the required service interval.

You don't......Just replace it when you are supose to. They don't give you any indication they are "going" to break, they just do.
