Chainsaw's answer is exactly why the police in the USA favor more gun control. "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns." Then, you will know who the outlaws are.
It's not a very coherent explanation for the difference between the two countries.
The real reason is "Do as I say, not as I do."

I noticed the article doesn't even claim Republicans favor, the alleged proposal. It is a collection of quotes. the only ones attributed to anyone are from a libertarian who opposed the idea. No source is given for the allegation that the proposal exists.
A B said that most police favor gun control. This is a myth. Most police unions do. Officers on the street overwhelmingly oppose gun control.

I just answered this in response to your previous question, but to expand on it a little -- Clearly the occupying forces are not going to tolerate anyone who acts in a threatening manner. Anyone who does so will be given fair warning, and will then be dealt with as necessary. For instance, there are a lot of jet skis in the coastal waters, and they are permitted at a SAFE DISTANCE from our Coast Guard cutters (which carry .50 caliber machine guns and a 25mm cannon), since a jet ski can carry enough high explosive to sink a 110 foot cutter.

Not when they are in the middle of a war zone. If guns are banned and someone has one, you can identify them as a bad guy and shoot them. Terrorists disguise themselves as civilians. How else are we supposed to know who the enemy is?
I will support anyone in Iraq having a gun as long as all the terrorists wear a red shirt. I am never going to support a policy that makes being a solider more dangerous.

They're in favour of gun control in Iraq for the same reason they're against free and fair elections in Palestine and Venezuela.
They're hypochristians.

I think we have differing ideas on gun control. My idea of gun control is killing your target with the first shot.
