i use a xda (first type) and when i insert a mmc/sd card in the slot it says..."would you like the system to format the card so the system can use it... yes/no" so i select 'yes' and it says: "an error occured while formatting the storage card folder" (error code 31)
i look in system/storage card bit, and it shows:
total storage card 0.00mb.. in use:0.00 free: 0.00
Please! whats going wrong....?(I have the latest rom upgrade, and have tried full/master reset, but no change... ) thanks to all who assist!!

I have had the MDA Compact and now the XDA 2i.
During my time with the first one, I had a problem similar to yours, it was all the time erasing the data from the SD (not very good, if you have TOMTOM installed) and I was so annoyed with it that I've decided to get to the bottom of the problem.
I took my phone to a TMobile shop and the technician had the nerve of asking 25 quid to check (CHECK!!) the mobile for me, although I was still covered by warranty! After I told where he should stick his cheek, I got one of those compressed air cans they sell at Maplin for 10 quid to clean circuit boards, keyboards and the sort and went home.
After two quick bursts of compressed air inside the memory slot (Remember to back up your data, remove the battery and disconnect all cables you might have connected to the XDA!) I realised the problem wasn't exactly with the SD card or the programming... since I (and most of us) carry my phone inside my pocket and not inside a sterile and dust free environment such as a vacuum bubble, there was a lot of dust and other bits inside the SD slot.
After doing that, peace was restored and I had never had any other problems with my SD's.
I hope this helps...
