Halle Berry is regarded as the first African-American to win an Academy award for Best Lead Actress. Technically, she is only half African-American, her mother is Caucasian. Physically, if she looked more Caucasian than African American the media probably wouldn't label her the "first." So is she really the first black actress to win best lead or the first bi-racial African-American to win best lead?

For the first time in 30 years, 3 black actor were nominated for an oscar in 2002. Halle Berry, Will Smith & Denzel Washington. Halle Berry & Denzel Washington were the first African American actors to actually win an oscar. Its not up to the media whether or not a bi-racial child is either race. Its up to the child. Halle presents herself as a black actress and tiger woods associates himself as asian or whatever his mother is. It's the child's decision and media has to respect that.

i don't think that halle is an African American. in fact to understand just what type of American she was we would have to know the genetic make-up of her grandparents and great-grandparents on both sides. Her father was black in color but what African tribes did his genetic markers come from...her mother, white in color...what were her genetic markers? I personally believe if we are going to call ourselves something besides good old American made...we should give all the credit were credit is due....like,,Russian, polish, German, Jew, Irish, Cherokee, American...and what is this...a person can have one drop of ***** blood in there genetic make-up and they can qualify to be an African-American...and if you don't have at least one-quarter Native American blood running in your veins....you can't qualify with the United States government for anything.

She is the first because of the "rule" of "One drop of black blood makes you black". I know it makes no sense, but that is how they determine it. So on her birth certificate, her race says "black". So yes, she is the first black woman to win an academy award.
