Powell is a politician at heart, and wants to be loved by the Washington press corps and other Washington insiders. He knows that the only way that 's going to happen is if he distances himself from the Bush administration.

One of the reasons Powell would never run for President (for either party) is because he's afraid to take a stand on anything. This is also the reason why his "polling" numbers are always so high...nobody knows where he stands on anything.

However, keeping that in mind, it's not unusual for a President's 2nd term cabinet and staff to be very different from his first term cabinet and staff... look at Clinton... George Stephanopolous (an adviser, not a Cabinet member) bolted before his second term started...he already had a gig lined up with ABC news as an "analyst".

Colin Powell resigned ? Really... he simply informed the president that he didn't wish to serve a second term as SecState... and of course, that requires a letter of resignation.

Many Cabinet Secretaries only serve a single term (both parties)... Bill Clinton had a different SecState for his two terms (Christopher & Albright). In fact, George Shultz is the only SecState since WW2 to serve in two terms (replacing Haig after a year and a half of service to President Reagan).

Perhaps he left for financial reasons... SecState receives a salary of about $185,000 per year. In the private -sector he can make millions per year giving a few speeches.

Plus there's the delight of the hours, the pressure, the travel... and the embarassement of having the CIA give you bad info to use in front of the UN.

Why don't you read Colin Powell's autobiography? Lot to learn. I don't want to make it too easy for you. Most people on this site are just looking for the quick and easy, if they're even looking for an answer at all.

Powell served under both of the Presidents Bush, and respected them both, and Dick Cheny, as good managers and strong decision makers.

Yes. Good question. He got tired of bad intel and working for a man that is clueless about leading a country because of hidden agendas and revenge for a threat against Bush Sr after the first Iraq war.

Yes I think Colin Powell resigned because he didn't like that Bush lied to him about WMD.

Basically, the WH was repeatedly ignoring his advice. Then, they made him go to the UN and make a WMD case with evidence that turned out to be totally false. They treated him like crap and made him look like an idiot. I'd have left.

Powell was a nice guy. He resigned because he had nothing in common with King George and his cronies.

I think he left because he saw the betrayal of our nation by President Bush first-hand and it sickened him.
