I read in a book that the optimal sleep pattern for an adult is 8 hours and between the hours of 10:00pm and 6:00am, 7 days a week. The hard part is sticking to this routine on the weekends if you don't have to work. However, I have heard many people say that it doesn't matter when you sleep, just as long as you sleep the same amount every day and during the same time frame. For example, if you slept from 12:00am to 8:00am everyday.

It has been my experience that I get better sleep at night. Currently, I work overnight at Walmart 10:00pm to 7:00am, so I have to sleep during the day and no matter if I sleep the same hours everyday or the same amount every day, I still don't feel as rested as I did when I was working a normal shift and could sleep at night. I do know that for some reason it has been harder for me to lose weight when I am working overnight and sleeping during the day than when I was working an evening or day shift and sleeping at night.

There can be no fixed yardstick of what is the ideal sleep time.

Its commonly believed that 8 hours would be ideal, but in many cases even 6 hours of sound sleep is sufficient and in cases where the person sleeps even for 10 hours but does not sleep soundly its not enough. so an ideal sleep time would be one in which a person sleeps soundly, dead to the world so that he awakes refreshed.

However the best hours to sleep would be between 23.00 hours and 5 hours.

AT LEAST 8 hours. Your body needs that. I usually go to bed at 10-10:30pm. Then I get up by 7:30-8am....so I usually get around 9 hours.
