The Dakar Rally is a two-week event (not a six-day as someone else has answered) that originally started in Paris but has actually started in other parts of France and Spain (the 2006 rally actually started in Lisbon, Portugal) and winds its way through several North Africal countries, to finish with a final stage along the beach in Dakar, Senegal.
Despite the name, it's really an off-road endurance race rather than a conventional rally, with three main classes: cars, including small trucks and buggies, heavy trucks and motorcycles and attracts both professional and amateur drivers and riders.
The rally starts on December 31 of each year.

The Dakar Rally (also called the Paris to Dakar Rally) is a 6 day event for off road cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATV's. It's always extremely difficult and dangerous.
You can see photos and a great description of the event on their website here http://www.dakar.com/
Awesome event, and a real accomplishment for a participant to finish the event, let alone win it!

The Dakar Rally is the last of the great long distance road races (eg. The Mille Miglia) and one of the few "life or death" events left in sport (eg. The Manx TT). It's two weeks of natural surfaces and unpolished roads.
The 2006 winner was an interesting name: Luc Alphand, winner of the 1997 World Cup downhill skiing championship. Bo doesn't know skiing or racing, Luc does.

It is yearly, two weeks more or less, off-road/endurance race with multiple checkpoints, starts in Europe, usually Paris every 31st of December, since 1979; goes to Gibraltar in Spain there it crosses to Morocco and turn east on the Sahara desert to, usually, Dakar, Senegal. It has finished also in Cairo and Cape Town. There are three categories from motorcycles, cars, buggies and trucks to heavy trucks and it has probed dangerous, since there have been casualties.

An off road rally similar to the Baja 1000 run in Mexico, this one is in the deserts of Africa. Many racers have been killed, hostile tribal people are along the route.
