When I read your question about the popular war song another came to mind straight away it was sung by Marlene Dietrich.

Marlene Dietrich sang 'Lili Marlene' and that was very popular.

I really like Rufus Wainright's "Complainte de la Butte," off the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack. It's only about half French, though. Some of the lyrics are sung in english.
