Actually you can be kind and cynical at the same time. There needs to be enough kindness to express their feminine attributes but enough cynicism to protect the little girl within.
JH may have found that nurses are targets for deadbeats who want to be "taken care of". Most people in the field have experienced this.

Why women in particular? What do *you* think of *men* who are kind, innocent and lacking in cynicism?
Personally, I dislike the macho posturing and/or tedious no-nonsense approach that tends to surround any notion of "toughness". I generally admire people who make an effort to be kind and thoughtful, despite their possible doubts and understandable cynicism. However, I don't think innocence should be upheld or admired any more than so-called "toughness". IMO, the old cliche that knowledge is power is actually very true. Isn't innocence simply a prettified form of ignorance?

-Surely a woman (or anyone) can be without cynicism, yet still be (what you call) 'tough.'
Why does 'cynicism' and 'toughness' come as a package deal?
Cynicism is generally a 'surly form of a Defence' against anything that is likely to upset an individuals status-quo, or to be a bloody minded form of 'attack' on some unsuspecting individual.
I can't say that I 'admire innocence,' but I respect it.
As for 'tougness,' why does one 'HAVE TO BE' that? What is it a mask for, or the camouflage protecting?
Sash.

Nurses have to show kindness and empathy but also have to be cynical and tough-as-old-boots, b4 anyone gets upset I am a nurse, it is a matter of balance.
Innocent, gulible people are more easily victimised and taken advantage as they do not see it coming.

As long as they don't approach me first thing in the morning with some high pitched too jolly "good morning" crap, I enjoy their innocence.

anyone not cynical isn't using their brain properly. innocence is nice in children, but the real world should open their eyes.

I prefer everyone just to be exactly who they are. I only would consider temperment if I had to marry them.
