My brother had this happen when his timing belt went. He had 20,000 miles on his car at the time and they had to pay for a new car because the engine was ruined.

I've also known of people who skipped oil changes -ran low on oil - and destroyed their engine.

Oil changes and maintaining proper levels are extremely important!

I know two causes of this. Check the timing belt see if it is one peace. Second remove the distributor cap and check that plastic plate under the rotor. This have been known to crack. Did you
run out of gas? I have seen this happen again and again.

out of gas, broken timing belts, key turned off, no spark,
