The war between the north and south was caused by:

Societal Differences: The North was industrializing; the South was agricultural.

Taxation: The Federal Government imposed excise taxes on cotton, tobacco, and sugar, the staples of the Southern economy.

Underrepresentation: Because of a deal worked out in the 1770's, blacks (who were almost exclusively in the South at the time) were counted as 3/5 of a man.

A motivating factor and good propaganda for both sides was the issue of slavery. But, anyone who still thinks that the war was fought to free the slaves has been reading school textbooks instead of history.
