I have lived and traveled throughout New England and I would say that the Nashua or Manchester, New Hampshire, areas are the best areas. First, they are not over-crowded and the people are friendly (which is not the case in much of New England). There are decent job opportunities and a decent cost of living. And NH is not overrun by filthy, nasty pockets of people like other areas in New England and the East Coast in general.

Maine would be my guess, maybe near Bangor? Definitely not in Eastern Massachusetts (where I live) - we have the highest housing prices in New England, with the possible exception of Fairfield County, CT (near New York City).

Parts of western MA might qualify, as might parts of CT away from NYC and Hartford (maybe near Torrington or near Willamantic). Southern VT and NH (and anywhere near a good ski resort) are suffering from folks from Boston and New York buying vacation homes and so boosting the housing prices. Same with the coast of Maine. I don't know much about northern VT and NH or the rest of Maine, though.

You will probably want to be near a real city so I would suggest a Boston suburb. There are plenty of great areas 30 minutes south or north of Boston. Keeping cost down, you compromise schools (if you have children), safety, etc. but a few good areas to check out would be:

Belmont, MA
Arlington, MA
Pembroke, MA
Weymouth, MA

More expensive areas are:

Newton, MA
Weston, MA
Duxbury, MA
Hingham, MA

Good Luck!

Probably not VT. I love that place, but the cost of living is too high compared with average wages. Good luck.

New Hampshire or Maine would be my guess. . . .There may be parts of Western MA that would be cheaper than in the eastern city side. . . .But New Hampshire has a lot of very nice areas.
