The Russians were on the defensive and were well prepared. They had 3 lines of prepared defense and they knew the German's were going to attack in that area.
The German super-heavy tank the Elephant was a failure. It was so slow the Russians just ran up to them and poured gasoline down the air vent and tossed in a Zippo.
The German flanks were guarded by Italian's - enough said.
The Germans were outnumbered in almost every battle in Russia. So numbers doesn't explain it. The Russians had more soldier in 1941 and lost millions of men. They even had T-34 tanks in 1942 and ALMOST lost the war at Stalingrad. Russian T-34 Tanks were superior to the older German tanks but not to the Improved Mark IV and certainly not the Mark VI.
The answer for the defeat lies elsewhere. Weak flanks and an entrenched enemy with pre-sited artillery. Kursk was more like a WWI battle in that sense. People shouldn't say things when they don't know what they are talking about.

Two of the answers, above, correctly point out the superiority in numbers of the Red Army and Air Force, as well as excellent and thoughtful preparation.
Another question is why the Reds were considered to have won, even though they lost more troops.
While not a perfect answer, in general, the party left controlling the field of battle is the "winner."

The Germans were outnumbered, even their tanks are better. The Russians were fighting for their country. You know, they had a lot of men, but they also lost a lot of them, but patriotism is the key to their final victories. The Germans had to concentrate on two battles: Stalingrad and Kursk, and two fronts: Eastern and Western.

That's easy, the Red Army had overwhelming numbers in men and tanks, they held the field after the battle, in other words, they won by battle of attrition

because there are more russians than germans. The russians can lose 20 million people and not have a dent in their overall population.
