No, The U.S. had little or NO territorial interest in Latin America. Political influence was another matter.

The U.S had lots of business interest there

Many Latin America countries were newly independent and he was concerned about Europeans messing with them. Remember the Monroe Doctrine?

The Panama Canal (after it was built) was a tremendous strategic asset to the U.S. Military. We could get war ships and supplies from the Atlantic to the Pacific much quicker. The Canal needed to be safe.

controlling trade there and forming an "alliance" (read puppet government) in panama that made his canal safe for shipping from New York to China and/or Los angeles. also, it prevented the socialists and other european influences from gaining a strategic foothold south of the border.
