Isn't diversity what makes this country so great?

I'm with you on that one. Those others are against us! What's our next move? lol

Seriously, I think that diversity is great. People have storng convictions about their beliefs. My problem is how "we" call one another idiots, just because we don't share the same views.

So, I am with you on this one Salem, although I am a Christian, who is against abortions, evolution and witchcraft. ;-)

It isn't so much diversity that makes this country (assuming you mean the USA, but be specific - the Net is international) great, it's the ability to create a consensus among all those diverse philosophies.

But you see a reflection here of the unfortunate tendency of many people to think that their beliefs must not be compromised to accommodate any other point of view. When enough people in a society think this way, you lose the capacity for democratic rule, as the minority will resort to violence rather than submit, and the majority will rule by oppression rather than consensus.

Demonization of one's political opponents is hardly a new thing in American politics though. Fortunately, we have so far always managed to live with whatever government we're stuck with, and to vote in a new set of idiots when the old ones become unbearable.

I'm not... one either believes in himself and his views, or he is wishy-washy with no spine. It is impossible for every point of view to be correct, because many are mutually excursive. You may have the right to believe anything you wish, but that doesn't mean that others don't have the right to point out how stupid that belief is.
And, no, diversity isn't what made this country so great... we are a melting pot with a national identity... not dozens of different identifies each going in their own direction.

Yes, but P&G is a form of trashy debate. At least we have the option to get on answers and disagree with each other.

I haven't noticed. I still believe that is one of the most important messages that people are suffering from exposure fatigue from though. If you leave the terrorist alone, they will not just go away. You better be on the right side!

I could go on and on about this but what I find is that the more closed minded a person is to another opinion the more likely they will resort to violence to get there way. Hence, radical Islam, Nazi Germany, Pol Pot, David Koresh, etc.

I don't know which country you are talking about but yes I am tired of this daft attitude which doesn't help anything. It certainly doesn't make our horizons any broader.

You are either with America or with the terrorists.
I would feel safer if you were with the terrorists.
