Word Problem?

Hey guys, need a little math homework help.
For every 2 cats there are 7 mice.
In total there are 6300 cats and mice.
How many cats are there?

Can you show me how you get this too? I hate word problems.
Thanks.

For every 2 cats there are 7 mice. The easiest way to set this up is to use a ratio. When you set up an equation to cross-multiply, you would think that your first fraction would be 2/7, but it wouldn't. Since there are nine total critters, two of them cats, you need to set up your equation to look like this:

2/9=x/6300

Then, you multiply in an X pattern (you don't multiply across when you are working with ratios) to get this new equation:
9x=12600.
Solve for X, which is 1400. If there are 6300 cats and mice, then 1400 of the creatures are cats. To see if this holds up mathematically, we make a new ratio to see if 1400 cats is correct.

2/7=1400/x
Again, cross-multiply.
2x=9800
x=4900
So, there are 4900 mice. 4900 mice and 1400 cats add up to 6300 total critters.

Ratios are equations that are used to compare things, to see how one thing relates to another. For the first equation, we used 2/9 because we needed to see how the amount of cats related to the amount of total creatures. For the second equation, we knew the amount of cats, so we now had to find the amount of mice. We were comparing cats to mice, so we used 2/7. Clear as mud, eh? :-)

It's a proportion problem. For instance, 1/2 is equal to 5/10. So 2/7=6300/x.

If something is 40% smaller, you in easy terms subtract 40%. So 40% of 40 energy is sixteen: you are attempting this by ability of multiplying 40 by ability of 0.4. the respond may well be 40 - sixteen = 24 A shorter way might purely be to multiply by ability of 40 by ability of 0.6, considering that could be a million-0.4.

You know that for 7 mice there are 2 cats, so
7m=2c
You know that mice+cats is 6300
m+c=6300

m+c=6300
subtract c to get M by itself
m=6300-c

now go back to 7m=2c
to get C by itself you, divide by 2
3.5m=c

now go back to the m=6300-c
since you know now that (c=3.5m) you can make it
m=6300-(3.5m)
to get M by itself, add 3.5m
4.5m=6300
divide everything by 4.5
m=1400

There are 1400 cats and 4900 mice
