I used to be all about me some Steinbeck when I was in, oh, about 8th or 9th grade. I read almost all his books and wrote essays on four or five of them. They're so real, so hard-hitting--that really appealed to me as a young teenager.

But then I got older and got depression and now I think they're almost totally insufferable. Such downers! They make me want to cry, or at least stop reading.

But I do still want to read that book he wrote about traveling with his dog. Travels with Charley? I think that's the name. That one sounds good.

Yes, very much. I've read most, if not all, of what he wrote. You know, he lived in Monterey, and wrote a lot about the places I have been. I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the next county north of Monterey.

His stories are somewhat gritty -- prostitutes and other "not polite society" people -- but they are honest and very well written.
