It was presumably the place where the Binding of Isaac took place.

It was the Capital of the former jewish kingdoms in Israel(2000 years ago).

Most of the jewish history took place in it and The main temple was located in it, thus it is well written about in the bible.

It was in the prayers(not as a metaphor, but in the text books of the prayers) of the dispersion and has great part in them keeping united and jewish.

Jewish pray to the direction of it.(the muslims BTW, pray in the direction of Mekka)

It is what they longed for 2000 years, every day they mention it in prayer .

In a jewish wedding, just befor the moment of celebration the groom has to say:

"If I shall forget you, Jerusalem, I will forget my right arm,
My tongue will stick to the [top of the mouth] if I will not remember you, If I will not put you on top of my joy"

but in Hebrew of course,
[You can see that Jerusalem is prior, on top of, the most significant moment of man's life - his wedding!]

Then he breaks a glass put on the floor with his leg, and then starts the music and he can kiss the bride.

The breaking of the glass is ment to symbol the ruin of the Temple.

Most of this actually explain how important it is for them, but it is also, in some way, why it is...

If you ask a jewish person they'll probably say It's important to them because that's where they first settled as a people. They'll say god promised them that tiny bit of land. And since settling there they've fought to keep it safe and invested their very lives in it, despite being repressed for no reason whatsoever. It's like asking an american why washington DC is important to them. It just is.

Historically speaking jerusalem was a major port. It had access to the middle east, europe and africa. Not to mention there was water and greenery there, a rare thing when you're completely surrounded by water. Thats why the world was fixated on that one city for so long.

It was their ancient capital. Solomon built the sacred temple there and the only remaining piece of the second Temple (the wailing wall) is still there.
