It puts a face on the story of a different culture. It allows people to be able to relate to other persons more easily. To see that while life is different in different places, its not so different. Someone once said that the common denominator among all the people of the world is that we all love our children.

Visual learners need the extra stimulation AND when pictures are used in teaching, students actually store the information twice in their brain, once for the data, once for the picture. Twice as many chances to pull the right info out when it is needed.

Working memory is limited in its ability to hold information. By using multiple types of stimuli you can effectively increase the capacity of this memory.
Different learning styles may respond better to visual stimuli. But the memory thing is the most important.

Well, it makes the information much more interesting and easier to remember. It can be pretty boring and pictures spruce up any subject.
