I can print when directly connected to the printer, I want to print from a MacBook Pro over the network to the printer which it typically connected to my wife's Win XP machine.

It's not an issue with the printer sharing, I can print to it with the MacBook Pro running Windows, I just can't print when running Mac. Definately something on the Apple OS side I believe.

Set up the Windows box for Printer Sharing in the contol pane(Applications < Utilities).

Is the HP by itself or is it shared through the XP pc?
If it is by itself, then try to use the printer's built-in IP printing wizard, it is a web site that runs off the printer. You enter the IP address of the printer into your browser and it will walk you through it. And yes, it is mac compatible, I have connected to recent HP printers from Tiger with no issues.
If you have the printer through the XP box, then you will need to connect to it as if it is a printer server.
