Measure every surface you are going to paint.
Square footage is length times width, so if your wall is 15ft wide and 10ft tall = 150 sq feet, ceiling is measured the same, but only if you are painting it. Just get the sq footage for every surface and then add them together for your total.

I assume you are painting the interior walls, not the outside. If you are going to paint the ceiling, you need to count it just like the walls. If you are painting all of your ceilings, and you know the square footage of your house, you can cheat and use that number added to the walls which are measured by width times height.

If you want that area for buying paint, the square footage won't end up making much difference anyway. Everyone's application rate per square foot is different so you will likely use more than the paint company says you'll need. Buy a bit more than you need to make up for spills, problem areas, over-application, etc. The other reason is that if you need more paint, the color can sometimes be difficult to match; e.g., different clerk mixing the paint, different lot numbers, etc.

an 8 x 10 room with a 7 ft ceiling is 8x10x7= 560 sf or about 1 gallon single application. add another 1/2 gallon for the ceiling 80 sf.
get a gallon per room, keep the can to buy more if needed. Bigger rooms get two gallons.
Painting white over red, double it. maybe use a primer.

say your room is 12 x 12 = 144
the ceiling is 144 sq.ft
that's four walls 12 ft long
12 + 12 + 12 + 12 = 48
the wall is 8 ft tall
48 x 8 = 384
384 + 144 = 528 sq.ft

Lenght x Width, every side, then total together. example, one side may be 24x18, that gives you 432 sq.ft. that's one side, do the same for another side, after you get the whole thing figured out, total them. Your ceiling, measure the lenght x width, that's your sq. ft.
