I've been looking for a new car, and all the ones I like are rear wheel drive. But because I go to school in an area with a fair bit of snow, I'm wondering if I should go with a front wheel drive instead. Are they really that much better?

You would think so, but it is not necessarily true. With all the weight up front and no drive in the rear, you have a tendency to fishtail in winter weather.

All wheel drive (which is different from 4 wheel drive) is the best for snow.

Front wheel drive is the only way to go on snow I have a dodge neon and it is front wheel drive does great in the snow' we had a major snow store about 5 years ago and had to pickup our son from the hospital and after i backed out and stayed in the lines where it was worn down alittle it did excellent my husband has a truck and it does lousy on snow and ice, not 4 wheel dr or front wheel drive just spins.

It's a matter of personal preference. Front-wheel-drive is neither better, nor worse than rear-wheel-drive, but rather DIFFERENT. If you are used to the way a rear-wheel-drive car handles, I suggest your next vehicle purchase SHOULD be another rear-wheel-drive vehicle. A FWD vehicle has an advantage in STRAIGHT LINE ACCELERATION on slippery road surfaces from a standing start ONLY. But, during turning manuveurs, a FWD car will UNDERSTEER, versus a RWD car OVERSTEERING when both encounter slippery road surfaces. It is also MUCH HARDER, if not impossible to correct, when you lose traction in a FWD vehicle. RWD vehicles are MUCH better in overall handling than a FWD vehicle. The proper balance in weight distribution is one of the reasons for this. Repairs for RWD vehicles tend to be less costly, due to the simpler drivetrain layout. This is why all the HIGH DOLLAR luxury vehicles are mostly RWD. Hope this answers your question FULLY, to help you decide. Good luck.

yes, all the weight is in the front and you have better traction. If you have a lot of snow I would look into a 4-wheel drive.

Yes because front wheel drive gives you more chances to grip the road, when you need to. Look at Dodges most are front wheel drive.

I prefer them. I had it put to me this way when I was just starting out, "It is easier to pull something than push." I always fishtailed when I had my rear wheel drive, and front wheels are easier to handle. It is to each his own, but I live in Maine, and there is no way I am having another rear wheel drive.

Usually YES since most of the weight of the car are in the front, that leaves alot less weight in the rear causing the car to "fish-tail" or spin out of control in snowy condition.

Yes!! How about a four wheel drive? You'll never be stuck in the snow or mud!!

Yes it is because all of your weight is in the front.
