I don't think anyone has ever proved a correlation.
For those who don't know, it's meant to be that the cows sense the rain coming and lie down on the grass while it is dry.
Now when they start putting up umbrellas that's a different story...

No Cows Do Not Sit Down Just If It's Going To Rain.
They Sit Down Whenever They Want.

Sometimes they do.
I used to have to walk through a field of cows to get to work. I never had any problems, until one day when it started raining when I was half way across the field. I can't remember if they were sitting down or standing but this is absolutely true, I put my umbrella up and the cows started chasing after me! As soon as I put the umbrella down again (I was quicker running with it down) they lost interest and just started grazing again.
That is until I put the umbrella back up again! Luckily I just managed to get the the far gate before they would have got me.
Has anybody else encountered this?

No. Cows sit down because they are tired.
Thousands of years of evolution has told the cows that the best way to stay dry is to shelter in a tree.
Now we all know cows can't climb, but this doesn't prevent them from trying, given their pea-sized intellects, and in their vain attempts to climb the trees they get tired and this is why cows sit down when it rains.. they are exhausted from their fruitless tree-climbing exertions.
Here are some more examples of the innate instinct of animals:-
- Ants know when it is going to snow. We know this because they will come into your house shortly before a snowstorm and steal all your salt and use it to keep their driveways clear.
- Squirrels know when an earthquake is imminent because their nuts start to vibrate.
- Birds who own alarm clocks eat more worms.
- And it has long been known that monkeys are expert at predicting floods. Of course, they don't give a damn because they live up trees and, consequently, give us absolutely no warning of our impending doom.
It is said that if you are escaping from a crocodile it is best to run in a zig-zag pattern. Crocodiles can't run in a zig-zag pattern, but they don't need to.
Try this. On a scrap of recycled paper draw a zig-zag pattern (this represents the hapless humans escape route) ..now draw a straight line through the zig-zag pattern (this represents the crocodile's inevitable route to lunch).
Best to head (in a straight line) for the nearest tree and climb it, assuming rain isn't on the way and a cow got there first.
I hope this helps.

i won't be able to say i've got ever seen a cow sit down. They lie all the way down to chew the cud. in the event that they are interior the open, the climate is in all probability super, if that is going to rain they are going to often locate some take care of, under a tree or interior the lea of a hedge, and are often close mutually in undesirable climate.

cows sit down because, you imagine getting as big and fat as them eating just grass and having your **** pumped twice a day for milk and farting All day from the methane off the grass.
in human terms it would be eating popcorn all day having someone pump you for personnel fluid twice a day and sitting down to think about going to the toilet. at least cows do not have to pay rent

A farmer once told me, "If the cows are standing, it`s going to be a real sunny day, " "If they are laying down, it`s going to rain."
I asked him "What if some are standing and some are laying down?"
"Scattered showers" he replied :-) :-)
