My daughter and I have ipods and we love them. You can download the cd's you have and any cd's you borrow from friends, onto itunes, which is free, and you can purchase songs for 99cents each song, no credit card necessary, you can buy itunes cards at places like Best Buy, or use music sharing programs on your computer to get music. You then create play lists of your favorites, plug the ipod into your computer and it transfers your music, books on tape, lectures, entire albums, podcasts, photos, and some other cool stuff. All you do then, is plug in your earpiece, or plug into your itunes stereo dock, and listen to your handpicked music. You can rate your songs and continue to live update your playlists, and much more... it's great!

Get an iPod. Great value for the money, awesome set of features, and you can get a ton of accessories.
Basically, you use software on your computer (iTunes, in the case of the iPod) to copy your CDs into the MP3 format. Then you connect the MP3 player to your computer and copy songs onto it, which you can then select and play using the buttons and display on the MP3 player itself.

A good MP3 Player is much better and cheaper than a silly iPod.
When you PLUG it into your PC, it appears like a new Drive. Simply use Windows Explorer to Copy your music files into it. There are many players that can RIP any Music CD into MP3 files.
Here are some awesome ones: Users rate these as FIVE STAR
SanDisk Blue 512MB USB 2.0 $49.99

SanDisk Sansa m240 White 1GB USB 2.0 $69.99

SanDisk Sansa m250 Silver/Black 2GB USB 2.0 $87.99

SanDisk Sansa m200 Silver/Black 4GB USB 2.0 $155.99

Keep in mind that a regular CD holds only 700MB. When you turn these tunes into MP3, they are much smaller. You will have LOTS of tunes on your MP3 player.
Let's look at just one iPOD
Apple iPod nano Black 4GB Model MA107LL/A - $219.99

Don't get an iPod. They cost too much for too little storage space and break after a year or two. Get a 20GB Sony Walkman instead. Pretty much the same price as an iPod but with added reliability, more GB per $ and you don't look like a poser.
