To put it briefly, the scientific method is a way in which scientists work to acquire new knowledge. The scientific method is often used when performing experiments. There are usually 4-5 basic points which are:
1. Observation (watch whatever it is that you are trying to find new information on)
2. Hypothesis (create a sort of intelligent guess based on what you're observing.)
3. Prediction (use the hypothesis to make a prediction)
4. Experimentation (test your predictions and change your hypothesis based on the information you find.)
5. Repeat (repeat steps 3 and 4 until your prediction is consistent with the results of the experiment)
