a complimentary color is a a color scheme incorporating opposite hues on the color wheel.
In this case red complements green. But it depends on the intensity and hue of the green.

try this:
green and fucsia
green and blue
turquoise and red
lime green and purple
emerald green and orange.

It all depends on the shade of green (there are hundreds shades of green so choosing one is rather impossible without seeing the exact shade) and your personal taste... Some think creme suits best, other would say pink or red, or something totally different... I'd suggest like others did: put different colors with it to actually see the matching result.

As for colorstudies: red is the complementary color for green

Dark greens= For not too much contrast, deep crimson or deep violet for a bit more of a mystery touch. For bigger contrast, white, beige or pastel pink. I think they're all best out of my "color matching "experiences". ; )

Light greens= Again, for not too much contrast, gold, pastel yellow, orange or of course the previous light colors of "dark greens". For a more striking contrast, dark chocolate, dark fuscia/purple/blue and black.

Blueish greens (aka= turquoise) = Actually, blues, greens, reds and purples are best! Anything that blends.

Hope this helped! =)

I agree with everything JD had to say, but I want to add that it depends on what shade of Green. Go an art store and buy a color wheel. Find a knowledgeable salesperson and have them explain it to you. I like your first choice of purple, but again what shade of purple?

In color theory, the complimentary color is the one opposite on the color wheel. In the case of green, orange is its compliment.
However, the contiguous color is the alternative. Contiguous to green on the color wheel is yellow on one side, and blue on the other.
I figure Nature (and who knows better?) did it best: She put green with every color!

Later: How on earth did I get a thumbs down for this answer!

any red should work because red and green are complementary colors on the color wheel

depends on what you're trying to match--clothes? interiors? flowers? i think orange or brown would go great, but it seems like almost anything goes with green (white too); be careful about red if you don't want to look too christmas-y.
