I never had to write one for the college I attended. However, I had read numerous ones from my friends. The #1 tip I can give anyone is just BE YOURSELF! I'm sure the admissions officers have read the stupidest sounding essas, just because the applicant is exaggerating his or her story to sound like he should get into the university more than another qualified aplicant. If you stay true to yourself, that will shine through in your writing, and help you stand out from the other applicants. Good luck with the process, I know it takes forever. But a word of advice: don't wait until the last minute. Get the application in ASAP. This shows the admissions office you are on top of things, and may increase your chances of getting in!

Be truthful and be yourself. If you need to lie or embelish in order to be accepted into college, then they are expecting another type of student, and it's going to be hard on you. There are many good options out there, so don't be stressed about "this one" or "that one." Think of this as your chance to find one that fits you best, somewhere where you can advance your education and also have a good time.
With that being said, do make certain that the application and essays have been gone over with a fine-tooth comb for grammatical errors, etc.

personally i would suggest that you write your essay on your best characteristics and also have good references to back you up on everything.
