If you live in the SW burbs, have you ever take the drive through Pilcher Park in Joliet in the fall? It's quite beautiful in the early afternoon, as is Dellwood Park in Lockport.

Try just driving south on Archer through the forest preserves and past Lemont and into Lockport, then follow a map to get to Joliet. It's not exactly highway, but it is scenic and close.

That's pretty hard too find near Chicagoland. Illinois is pretty much table top prarieland in the northern part. You could try Illinois state road 29 off I-80. Then take exit 61 south and follow the Illinois River towards Peoria. There is also Illinois state road 2 between I-88 and Rockford. It follows The Rock River. Maybe you could try tooting around Midewin National Tall Grass Prairie south of Joliet.Oh, just dawned on me, Check out Starved Rock area. Hop on I-80 and take exit 81south. That is some scenic area real close to the south side. If you want to make an afternoon of it take I-90 out of town. Merge with U.S. 20 in Rockford. Take it all the way to Galena. Soak up one of best looking town in the state. Take U.S. 20 back east 12 miles and take Illinois 84 south. The Mississippi Palisades is off there. They are huge rocky bluffs along The Mississippi River. What ever you decide to do, Have a safe trip.

About an hour will get you to the mighty Fox River. Cross it to take rt 31 north. Stay on it until you see what you like...There are many towns and sights until you get to Lake County. The sights continue into Wisc if you like. Get the Chgo Tribune or Rand McNally map of Chgo for an excellent reference.
