First, the camera represents the viewer (you), so in a closeup you get physically and psychologically closer to the actor/s and therefore more involved in what is going on..
Also it is an effective way of observing the facial expressions of the actor/s, which is meant to let us know more about the characters and what they are thinking and feeling.
Good direction and editing provide an effective variety of shots which simulate reality. Ideally you would hardly notice the editing because the flow of shots should seem perfectly natural.

because an entire movie consisting of set shots would be stupid. part of the draw of Films over live theatre is that you can get closer to the action, and see the details where as live theatre is alll seen from the perspective of where your seat is.
If the camera never zoomed, or their were no close up cuts, do you realize how much the actors would need to over act in a scene to convey the emotions. the only stars who could do a film like that would be Jim Carrey and Robin Williams

Just thought I would comment that Steve Martin on SNL last night had a skit all about close-ups...it was HILARIOUS!
I would say it adds to the drama...at least that was the point Mr. Martin was trying to get across....:)
